What’s wrong with my IBM screen?
I have an Ibm T41 which is about 5 years old.. still works great.
But the screen tends to cut off after awhile. It would just go black. And the funny thing is, I can still adjust the brightness.
Another thing that happens is if I apply pressure near the keyboard and push the screen to the left, it would appear again. And sometimes if I apply too much pressure, the screen would reappear frozen with lines all over and I’d have to reboot, holding down the power button.
Took it in for a diagnostics at a pc store, but they couldn’t figure it out.
Think it has something to do with the hinges?
Help please.
Thanks.
A couple of possibilities:
There is a flex cable that runs from the base of the Thinkpad up to the screen this carries the data for the screen to display. This could have cracked from the constant flexing of opening and closing the screen.
If you are pushing down on the base of the Thinkpad, just above the keyboard, then the other possibility might be a problem with the seating of the video chip on the motherboard.
Lenovo (IBM) will fix either for a price! They should be able to give you a quote. If it is the flex cable then I might consider it, but replacing the motherboard would probably cost more than the laptop is worth.
If you can find a similar T41 cheap on E-bay or Craigslist etc. then you could buy that and then swap the hard drive for yours (and add the memory together if you can) But there is no way to determine how much life is in the replacement system.
IBM is selling refurbished units on it’s web site:
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&categoryId=2576396
But Ebay looks cheaper.
If it is the cable then an alternative is to use an external display plugged into the VGA port. This will work fine, but kind of defeats the point of having a portable computer.
