Which laptop would be the best value for money if I have about £300($600) to £600($1200) to spend?
I would like a long battery life, about 1GB RAM, about 80-100GB HDD, Centrino, possibly core duo, a strong, rugged, durable machine.
Laptops by their nature are not rugged, but i know of 2 machines that fit your price range and are very good deals. Ive been looking to purchase a laptop myself with the capabilities of light gaming. A gaming laptop will be able to run any app or task you have for it. Here are the two priced below 1200. You can downgrade some of the parts if you wish to save money, i would guess around 200. Remember the higher the componets the more battery they take, and also the more demanding theapplication, i.e. games.

If you plan on running Windows Vista I suggest atleast 2 gigs of ram. Vista is a resource hog and will bog down you computer if you dont ha ve enough ram to support it. Remember you can downgrade some parts to save money and prolong battery life. Also you can purchase your operating system and intall it yourself for about half the price ($80). Go to microsoft.com and find the OS, then click the other retailer on the right side of the screen. I will most likely be purchasing the asus s96s because it suits me better because of the better video card. If you have any questions add a detail and i ill respond.
